Council Agree to Save Local Pubs
Local pubs perform a vital community service and should be protected from being shut down and turned into flats, councillors agreed last night.
Guidelines will be drawn up to try to stop developers getting hold of local pubs with a high land value, then carving them up to sell on for large profits.
The move follows a planning meeting on Tuesday in which councillors agreed a scheme to turn the Olive Tree pub in Perrers Road, near Ravenscourt Park Tube in Hammersmith, into two maisonettes and three flats.
A similar bid in August to split the Cottage pub in Colehill Lane, Fulham, into two maisonettes and four flats was also passed at the recommendation of planning officers.
A motion was passed unanimously resolving to develop planning guidance to preserve pubs in the borough which are 'a much-loved aspect of our heritage.

Shepherds Bush Car Club
A car sharing club in Shepherd's Bush now has 3,000 members using 45 vehicles in 35 locations around the borough, with another 10 locations to follow before the end of the year.
Streetcar claims local demand for VW Golfs, Polos and Transporter vans - which are hired on a pay-as-you-go basis from bays on the street and in car parks - has rocketed by more than a third in Hammersmith and Fulham over the last 12 months.
Co-founder Brett Akker said: "There are few boroughs where the potential benefits of joining a car club can be so high. As the cost of car ownership increases and parking congestion in the borough worsens we are finding more and more people giving up their private cars in favour of our service."

Hidden Parks In London; Wormwood Scrubs
A free weekday lunchtime Picnic in the Park will be held in early July at a secret location in central London. As well as free picnic lunches for the first 2,000 people, a jazz band and giant garden games, there will be a 'sunshine zone' for sun worshippers and a 'chill-out zone' where you can kick back on a hay bale and flick through a selection of magazines.
Presenter, writer, adventurer and London resident himself; Ben Fogle will also be at the event, which is part of a wider campaign to help people discover London's Secret Spots in which to relax.
Ben says of the initiative: “I love London's hidden parks, squares and gardens. This is one of the world's greenest cities, mainly on account of its dozens of hidden squares - many of which are open to the public.”
One of Bens favourite areas is in W12;
'Wormwood Scrubs may conjure up images of prisons, worms and scrubland, but in fact it is a hidden gem in west London – used by dog walkers, model aircraft enthusiasts, Sunday league footballers and even the household cavalry, who practise their ceremonial horse duties here once a week. You can even go on guided wildlife walks among the "scrub"...'
Just north of the Westway, up Wood Lane heading away from Shepherd's Bush and White City, the Scrubs provides beautiful open parkland. It's one of central London's few nature reserves.

London Landlords Advised to Avoid Hidden Renewal Fees
The National Landlords Association (NLA), the leading national body for private-residential landlords in the UK, has called on landlords in London and the South East to shop around for letting agents that do not charge unfair, 'money for nothing' renewal fees.
Many landlords in London and the South East continue to be charged fees of around 11 per cent for renewing properties on a let only basis.
Over 70 per cent of landlords* consider this renewal fee to be unfair and not a true reflection of the work actually undertaken. It is a regional anomaly - a problem unique to London and the South-East. Most letting agents in other areas of the UK will not make any additional charges for a let only rental property.
During the economic downturn, the NLA strongly recommends landlords carefully consider all their options. Avoiding letting agents that charge this unjust fee will undoubtedly help to reduce landlords' operating costs. The last thing any landlord needs at this time is a hefty bill from a letting agent who has done nothing to earn the fee

Shepherds Bush and Brook Green Lettings London W6 & W12
Brook Green, whilst located just to the north of Hammersmith, retains a village atmosphere and is therefore a popular residential location. Properties are mainly family houses and apartments in conversions.
Neighbouring Shepherd's Bush, just to the west of Brook Green is known mainly for being home to the BBC. The area is busy and therefore a popular choice for young single professionals and couples. Shepherd's Bush is very reasonably priced, given the convenience of the underground lines serving the area.
